Recruitment and Leadership Case Study

Summary
Client presented with challenges and issues stemming from a comfortable and safe working environment resulting in the team being unwilling to identify and implement different ways of operating preferring to continue doing the same thing expecting a different result. The leader of the business openly acknowledged not knowing the best approach to take to lead the business out of its current productivity and growth slump.

The client wanted to create a shift in thinking within the team to be more open to change and be comfortable and confident to identify and suggest new ideas in an endeavour to drive growth in the business. The leader recognised that in order for this outcome to be achieved a significant change in their leadership style and approach was needed.

Data Insights

Profiling uncovered 70% of team had thinking that was lagging and their capability to grow was impacted by the business owner being stuck in their approach and a way of thinking that was focused on being in control. This was costing the business financially with sales reducing each month and preventing improvement opportunities from being implemented.

  • Willingness to embrace change and adapt/li>
  • Committing to personal growth and development
  • Enhancing results through measures and metrics
  • Committing to actions that build strength, courage, vulnerability, resilience and humility through both success and failure
  • Assertiveness and conflict management skills
  • Observing and reflecting for growth markers

Approach

The owner of the business received mentoring to challenge beliefs and attitudes causing challenges in her leadership style. Specific actions were proposed for her to test and measure so she could observe how small shifts in thinking creates ripple effects throughout the team. Support was provided through scheduled face to face sessions along with additional support via phone and email as needed.

Several strategic sessions were held with the team to cultivate and develop strategic thinking, creative brainstorming and assertive communication providing a foundation of capability for the new General Manager to build upon and utilise once hired.

A portion of the strategic sessions focused on individual and team capability development identification for the purposes of developing a long term development plan to be actioned and implemented.

Outcome

Within 3 months, monthly sales started to rise again, consistently each month, resulting in record sales months being experienced within the first 12 months of the program.

Based on the data, our recommendation was to hire a General Manager that could take over running the business freeing the business owner to shift their thinking to create future growth opportunities and removing them from the day-to-day operations. This recommendation was implemented and a General Manager was hired and embedded successfully in the business towards the end of the program to ensure a smooth transition.

A development program was implemented to support individual team members to build the capability needed to support the business.
